Finding Soul

Finding Soul -self Portrait

I created "Finding Soul" to display the bond between my self-image and my own creativity. I've always had a deeply expressive and artistic mind. Despite the support I received from friends and family, I never quite knew what to do with my gifts. Sometimes life encouraged my iridescent artistry and craftsmanship; other times, it forced me to suppress my way of thinking and pushed me into STEM.
As much as I tried, I couldn't summon my artistic expression on command. The times I felt the most peace were not when repressing my creativity, nor when I was luring it out, but when I simply let it be. I let it speak to ME and learned from it. Not seeking, not harnessing, not even studying. Just Finding Soul.

Pandora

While creating the figure "Pandora" I had several different interpretations in mind. When I started, I simply wanted to make a piece that combined my favorite styles of art all into one piece, from pottery to pop art.
The more I worked, however, the more I noticed the contrast of the two halves: the right side being more whimsical and colorful, depicting post-modern pop art and gentle watercolors, while the left sports more geometric forms, with monochromatic sketching and clay sculpture.
Upon finishing this artwork, I decided to call her Pandora, after the Greek myth of the gods' creation of the first woman. She was created to have a little bit of everything, just like the woman I created in this piece, and the name still fits her beautifully.

Origins

Origins

This is one of my oldest portfolio works and it holds so much personal significance that it managed to stand the test of time. I made this organic watercolor painting just a couple of years ago.
The silhouette of an African woman acts as a window to a beautifully saturated sunset, mirrored through a body of water.
To make it a bit more lifelike, I illustrated African shrubbery and two elephants are reflected in the water. I remember this piece serving as something groundbreaking to me as if I could consciously feel myself growing as an artist.

Bored

I drew this self-portrait in early 2020, conceptualizing my relationship with quarantine at the time. I wanted to experiment with my cartooning style, exhibiting a granular, dreamlike texture.
Skills and practice aside, 2020 was clearly a very difficult time for everyone, so I wanted to inspire myself and possibly others with this brief moment of levity during an era of fear and uncertainty.
Besides, it's even funnier once you get to know me since it's exactly how I act when I'm completely and utterly bored!

Abandoned Sundae

Abandoned Sundae

"Abandoned Sundae" is one of my simpler artworks, showcasing a single ice cream sundae. This piece demonstrates my intense attention to detail and the additional challenge of using inverted colors, which contrasted greatly with the bright red of the canvas.
I couldn't just rely on muscle memory to apply pressure in shading and a lighter hand for highlights. I had to rework my skills and approach the piece from a different angle, which I executed with great care.
